SCHOSTAKOVICH ENSEMBLE IN LISBON

On March 4th 2018, at Lisbon's Centro Cultural de Belém, the DSCH – Shostakovich Ensemble premiered Syrinx or the Greek Enchantment, a concert whose narrative is based on the figure of Syrinx, the nymph with whom the god Pan fell in love and who, when running away from him, was transformed into  the reed from which Pan made his famous flute, which he then played… Several of the works that are included in the concert drew their inspiration from Greek antiquity and the figure of Pan, like Debussy, marking the centenary of his death, others reflect the “enchantment” and attraction that great composers, such as Ravel and Shostakovich, felt for Greek folk music. For this concert, the pianist Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro, founder and artistic director of the Shostakovich Ensemble, invited the following guest artists to participate: mezzo-soprano Angelica Cathariou, one of today’s leading Greek singers, Portuguese-Peruvian pianist Rosa Maria Barrantes and British flautist Emily Beynon, a leading world reference in her instrument and the principal flute of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
