CLASSICAL SUMMER 2017: FESTIVAL AND MASTERCLASSES

CLASSICAL SUMMER is an initiative with a performative axis and an educational axis, namely the Festival and the Masterclasses, with artistic and pedagogical direction by Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro.
The third edition of CLASSICAL SUMMER - Lisbon Internacional Music Academy was held from the 1st to the 10th of August 2017, at Centro Cultural de Belém. It included daily concerts and Masterclasses with participation of musicians and teachers of great reputation, from some of the most prestigious international teaching institutions such as Paris, Berlin or Lucerne and soloists of the world's best orchestras as Orchestre de Paris, Berliner Philharmoniker and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.
Between August 1st and 10th, CLASSICAL SUMMER Festival presented concerts with great works from the 18th to the 21st centuries: four MasterFest concerts, with the presence of internationally acclaimed musicians, as well as six TalentFest concerts, with the CLASSICAL SUMMER young participants, already awarded nationally and/or internationally.
Every year, CLASSICAL SUMMER includes a new instrument and in 2017 was the turn of the oboe, with the presence of Ramón Ortega Quero, one of the most outstanding oboists of nowadays, winner of the prestigious ARD Competition in Munich in 2007 (after 40 years without awarding 1st Prize - the previous winners were Heinz Holliger and Maurice Bourgue), already with several awarded CDs and soloist of one of the best world orchestras, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.
There were other debuts among CLASSICAL SUMMER 2017 teachers, such as violinists Corey Cerovsek and Elina Vähälä, horn player Marie-Luise Neunecker, cellist Kyril Zlotnikov, of the Jerusalem Quartet, and double bassist Gunars Upatnieks, of Berliner Philharmoniker. As usual, there were also musicians who give us the honor of repeating their presence, like Russian pianist Eldar Nebolsin, French clarinetist Pascal Moraguès, German violist Isabel Charisius and American cellist Gary Hoffman.
The performative axis of CLASSICAL SUMMER, which includes the Festival concerts, is complemented by the educational axis, the Masterclasses, which are lessons on technique and musical interpretation. After 320 lessons in 2016, in 2017 took place about 380 lessons of eight instruments (piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, oboe, clarinet and horn) and chamber music.
CLASSICAL SUMMER Masterclasses were oriented by 11 teachers, of 10 nationalities, and took place simultaneously in several halls of Centro Cultural de Belém. For practice and rehearsals, there were rooms in Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra for young musicians. The Masterclasses are intended for music students, professional musicians and music teachers. For 2017 edition, as in 2016, were selected about 150 young musicians and more than 30 participants repeated their presence. A majority of two-thirds were Portuguese, some of them living abroad, and about 50 were foreigns from more than 20 countries.
All participants in the Masterclasses are candidates for CLASSICAL SUMMER Awards, whose jury was composed by the Masterclasses teachers. These prizes, in the form of concerts included in musical seasons held in Portugal, have an important role of motivation and recognition of talent and  the participation by the young musicians during CLASSICAL SUMMER.
CLASSICAL SUMMER, thus, promotes education and public presentation of young talents, supporting and helping them to build their careers, and at the same time, encouraging cultural exchange among participants of different nationalities. To Portuguese students, it offers, in their own country, a platform for development of their artistic level and the exceptional possibility of learning with the most prestigious international teachers, worldwide references of their instruments.
With the aim of decentralizing and extending the event to other regions, CLASSSICAL SUMMER went to Bragança and, on June 21st 2017, presented a concert, at the Municipal Theater, and open lessons of piano, violin, cello and chamber music for the region's young musicians.
CLASSICAL SUMMER 2017 included for the first time, sessions of Alexander Technique by Alexander Olschewski, from Berlin, enhancing body consciousness and balance.
CLASSICAL SUMMER assumes itself as an unique artistic and pedagogical initiative in Portugal, a pole of cultural excellence on an international scale.
