6th MUSICAL-MENTE Concert Series
Mosteiro de São Bento da Vitória, 2026
Curated by Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro
Co-organised by DSCH – Associação Musical and Teatro Nacional São João
The 6th MUSICAL-MENTE series takes Music and Literature as its central theme. The resonances between the two could hardly be more vividly evoked than in the programme of the first concert. On World Music Day, we will hear an extraordinary chain of echoes: Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata (1803) inspired Tolstoy’s literary imagination, while the Russian writer’s novella The Kreutzer Sonata (1898) found a deeply personal response in Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1 (1923), also known by the same title. Three masterpieces united by the turbulent currents of desire, jealousy and the tragedy of human passion.
Inspired by the Christmas spirit, the second concert creates a dialogue between the humane and humorous world of Dickens’s A Christmas Carol and two musical works imbued with a rare luminosity: Schubert’s Trout Quintet, the most celebrated of all piano quintets, and Dvořák’s Piano Quartet No. 1, a true hidden gem of the repertoire.
The performances bring together outstanding musicians, with highlights including the Portuguese debut of the Kairi Quartet, an award-winning Japanese ensemble based in Salzburg, and the 20th anniversary of the DSCH Schostakovich Ensemble, celebrated with the programme of the second concert.
